I can understand the point you are trying to make but I think starting a business in the village can also be profitable that s if you can have a business that is in demand every now and then by the villagers, let's take for example selling of fertilizer or other farm product can sell pretty much.
If you want to start a business in rural areas then I think the business of clothes will be the best because Villagers have a lot of trouble to go cities so this buisness is best to start in village especially .

Rural area Bussiness is farming and sales Bussiness is good for the rural area but big income is not possible bhut people living happy and enjoying the life and some rural people lived in village but work in urban areas
Maybe a carwash can do it, or a sort of delivery business. Specially these days wherein lot of people prefers to stay at home and lying on bed, they tend not to go outside but to shop online. Maybe a delivery business will have a nice shot, but just keep in mind that starting a businesss lies a big risk. Soo think twice.

Since the main occupation of most inhabitants of rural area is Farming, and most of the farmer are in need of high quality agro-chemical to improve the yield of their crops, one can easily bridge the gap between producer of agro-chemical and the farmers by buying the chemical on wholesale and retailing to the farmers thereby engaging on business in rural area.
The best Business to do in the rural area still remains farm product but aside that maybe you can advice that your friend to learn a skill. Like barbing, road side mechanic. If he can be patient to learn a profitable skill he will make good amount of money after graduation because most people who learn handwork always run to the city and the little who stays in the village do make good money.
One good business one can do in rural area is agriculture. This is quite wide and extends beyond cultivating and planting crops. It also involve animal rearing. Poultry farming for example. Rural Farmers can also plant commercialisable crop or plant such as cocoa.

Sorry I can't give an adequate response because I'm not in that particular area, successful businesses are born by looking for a solution to a problem, so he needs to do a visibility study in that particular area to know what can thrive.
Those options your friend mentioned are the best option of business that can boom in the rural areas. The ones i can suggest is mainly marketable in the urban areas. Maybe he should try selling animal feeds, like chicken feeds, dog, fish etc. Those ones can turn productive for him since the village is home of animals.
