Do you need to be an expert in your field to become a manager?

To be a manager is not about being an expert in your field alone though it is an advantage. What is required is the person who can manage men, money and materials well enough to bring profitability and progress to the business.

Well... You need to be an expert in your field to become a manager.
How would you manage an office you're not into?

Well I don't think so but then one had to have a little knowledge about what he ur she is managing and the manager should be open to learn new things from other people even his workers

That's the question I actually asked myself. You can't manage something you barely understand, you will atleast have to work under a manager for quite sometime before you can assume the post of a manager. That's the reason they observe promotion in business, because the higher you go the more experienced you become and the post of being a manager is the limit one can be promoted to meaning that you must have had maximum experience

Most managers we see today are not even related to that field in terms of education or job skills but they are able to do very well, simply because they have good management skill in general.
There are lots of things that can give one the needed edge when it come s to the issue of managerial competence, one of the is the issue of cognitive experience on the job, because this exposure really count.

That's true though, let's say you have a business, who would you place as your manager? A person who studied that particular thing and is considered a professional, or someone who has all the skills needed as a manager but not a professional in the filed?

A person who has a baground already with the fundamental has a good chance of suceeding very fast in the job,but sometimes what you encounter on the field is quit different from what we learn as theory, reason most employers do go for experience.

Well said, I know of someone who hired a so called professional to handle a particular electrical job, he could not solve the issue, in the end it was another guy who was able to fix it, not because he is a professional but cause of his experience.

Experience is very important in any operation, tht is the more reason why employers always insist on experience hands to carry out job schedule and proceses. It will save time and resources in getting a new intake to be trained.

He needs to acquire some skill If only he wants to be a successful manager. But these days anyone can become a manager without any management qualities.

I have seen some cases whereby the hire certain persons to be managers not cause of their skills but because of their experience. Experience or skills which would you go for for?

You don't really need to be an expert in your field to become a manager but you have to be very knowledgeable in that field. You have to be open to new ideas and inquisitive. Also you must be willing to know more.

It is not necessary, but it is good to be. Being an expert will make people to feel your work and decision. So even though you are not an expert try to become one.

The key responsibilities of a manager include handling administration, marketing and promotion, looking after product development, etc. You need to be expert in these areas.

You dont need to be an expert in the field to become a manager , all you need to do is to be hard-working , know the basis , have leadership skills and keep learning.

When it comes to purely management you do not need any kind of expert skills before you can be able to lead People. You just have to have some entry-level knowledge about it and also some experience at the top level.

Becoming an expert will help you when you become a manager of a company but it is not necessary. You need more than expertise in order to become a successful manager in a company. You must be able to bring out the best in people that work under you.

Just like you said, it is not necessary but it might give you added advantage when it comes to dealing with your staff. Not everyone has good management skills so it is necessary to acquire them in order to become a good manager.

I understand that being an expert will give comparative advantage over others when you are applying for the job of becoming a manager in a company. But it should not be something that will prevent someone from applying when there is vacancy for the role.

The managerial expertise is actually learnt in school so it's not about you being an expert in your chosen field of career before you can become a manager it is a very technical role that is mostly learnt in school.
