You know a really funny story about .ml? They kept getting email meant for .mil (US military) domains that got typoed. They were receiving hundreds of thousands of misaddressed emails a year.
I assume that's part of the reason it's not free any more - because the old maintainer retired and a new maintainer for the domain came along.
I've used it before whenever I was testing things out. I usually used .tk more whenever I needed a free domain, sometimes .ga would be another extension I'd use. It's funny that they kept getting mail for .mil lol.
Honestly, this is one of the perks of owning a domain that you definitely will always keep - I’ve owned a domain for 22 years at this point, my email is tied to it (so I can take it anywhere), and I can throw any number of test subdomains up whenever I like without any headaches.
