Say I have a domain name under .COM, would it be a wise investment to also get .NET and a few others and have them redirect? I heard this is a good way of preventing copycat businesses as well.

I think this is still a wise decision but there are still other domain ending like .gg , .tv and others , which copy cat can still use

Yes! Its worth it, buy if you want to protect your brand.
Do you have experience doing this yourself? I remember 10 or so years ago, a shop I enjoyed had a copycat pop up that mimicked their site exactly. They ended up going to court over it. It was a mess! I want to avoid this if I can.

I definitely think it's worth doing so especially if it's for a business project rather than a personal one. I've only made websites for fun, never for profit and I've only had two domains point to one site before. Be sure to get DMCA protection if you can to avoid running into a issue with copycats. You can get a free DMCA badge from the DMCA website that you can add to your own site.

Hello, as long as you put the page to good use, keep it active, updated, fresh, there is no need to create the Net, what you can do to extend yourself or make yourself known in another way is to create the brand on the networks.

I don't think so to be honest. Unless that niche is very popular, we shouldn't try to purchase more than one domain and one domain extension for a single website. I have two domain extensions at the moment and I have been thinking of all the renewal costs lately.

Considering everything, I don't think it's a good idea to purchase more than one domain and it's just not worth it.

After you get more than one domain, you wouldn't want to let go of it and you would be paying a lot in the end. So, I would never recommend it.

The .com extension is King among all other extensions. There is no need buying the other extensions when you already have the .com which is the most popular of all.

Yea! Just like what happened to Facebook, they had to spend millions of dollars to purchase Fb.com just to protect their brand

Value + Brand
How well do you value your brand. And what's your brand value itself. If its worth it. Place trademark on it.

Buy off TLDs of your business domain name. Like someone said, it's for name protection. But the best protection is trademark.
This work mostly if your domain is a brandable type. Then you may not need to buy other TLDs if its trademark protected.
If anyone buy such name, you can sue them and get it but it will still cost you.

So the 2 options if your domain name is brandable is to buy off the other TLDs if your business has higher value.
Or place trademark on it.
Or just stick to your .com if you can't manage renewal fee.

Another thing is::: You can buy business related domains that have values like backlink, majestic valid trust flow, valid pointing domains. These type of domains will generate more traffic for your business.

yes, it's a good idea not to have the name copied :) you take most of the domains and redirect them to yours, the main one.

You can for example run 3 blogs: Joomla, Wordpress, Drupal then first will get .COM, second will get .NET and third will get .BIZ with same name and links between them and you feed three or them with content and you will get updated with 3 CMS news. This is one of reason of buying multiple domains.

Multiple domains to prevent copycat is good idea, however there are so many names that it is not wise to go after everyone.
.com is for business and .net is for network, similarly .org is for organisation. Even Redcross have .org domain, they don't go for every domain.

Wow, this is a very nice business insight. But I think thàt someone who has the .com extension Does not need to worry about people taking the other extension. .com is the most popular. It you have it, no need to worry.

.com is most popular, however not every Institute can use it. I was trying to get domain for our organisation, but .com was rejected as NGOs can only use .org , same way a company using .com is perfect, they do not have to worry about others.

We learn every day. Thank you so much for this enlightment. I thought any organization or company can decide to use whatever extension they want to. Now I understand better.

Domains are very cheap to purchase and if you see a reason why to purchase more than one then why not, please do it's worth it.

It is never worth unless some similar domains have to be kept in order to avoid a copy. However domain for different institute are not worth for another institute.

I have several domains but I am not working on them. Which makes their use as good as NIL. You should only buy the domains if you are interested in them. You should invest into the domains only if you are planning on recouping that investment. I know it is a bit difficult to work on all domains but one domain a year is a good target to go with.
