One of the most used options today is to use the Moderation of Topics and Answers of Users until you know their interest and contribution to the forum, after X amount of post does not require obligation to use online moderation of what you publish

I have always seen 30 day trial periods for any new staff member before on forums. You basically would read documents. Most of the time it was just a training thread with text, screenshots, etc showing the mod how to do their job.

It was the exact same time duration I was placed on probation when I was hired in Forum Promotion. I was required to pass the 30 days probation period in order for me to become a full staff. I used it to master how to carry out my duties efficient and effectively.
