How do you chose the right color palette for your website?

Making the right choice for the color palette for the website that you are designing involves doing a lot because you will first of all, have the audience that will be visiting the website in mind. Do you have a guide that you follow when picking a color palette for your website?

I want the look to be pleasant to the eye. In other words, it would not cause eye strain. Also, the area where words are displayed should be easy to read.

If say talking forums, I normally try and find a theme I like that has a similar color palette to what I already had in mind and then try to replicate or modify to suit...

It can be hard and yet for a gaming-style website, it's easy as you would just pick anything and then edit with gaming-style images. Dark or light works for both ends. But having that option available for members to pick
