It is best to note that every staff employed by an employee has their individual role and if that individual isn't impacting the companies general growth then the purpose for which they were employed is not achieved.

Employee can merasure the impact of their works on the gain the company is seeing daily and monthly , if they are making enough sales every day and they are having new customers , then that means they have impacted positively towards the business.

We as employee measured the impact of our work most of the time according to the salary we are earning because we realises that we deserved better , and that our work is higher than our pay.

Probably, companies have different measures in which the news to determine the performance of their workers. Like you have stated, some of them use sales as they measure.
 
It really depend on the kind of task given to them, the task will be the tool to measure their work for that day. taking for instance an individual is working at a bank as an accountant, so a task is being given to the accountant that the bank has ran into problem so the only thing he will do is to rectify it from the banks website.
The performance of an employee is one of the criteria that goes to show how his work is being of benefit to the organisation,this is a funtion of his capacity or training based on the job schedule.
