Unfortunately certain things aren't built to last and over time things will start to deteriorate. Video games are no exception, and over time our physical games will start to suffer from either bit rot or disc rot. I recently made the decision to finally get around to playing the games I've never played yet in my collection, I used Wheel Decide to figure out what game I was going to play first. It landed on a Gamecube game called "Judge Dredd: Dredd Vs Death." I hooked up my Gamecube and when the bios loaded, my console tried it's hardest to read the disc but I got that dreaded (no pun intended) disc read error. I panicked and thought it was my Gamecube so I grabbed my copy of Sonic Heroes and it loaded just fine. I looked at the back of the disc and noticed that there was some white residue on Judge Dredd, which is most likely disc rot. The game is a paperweight now, which is unfortunate since Gamecube games are not cheap anymore... Have you dealt with this?

Several CDs that I burned twenty years ago cannot be read anymore, mostly cheap GQ ones from Fry's Electronics that came in spindles of 100.

Eek! I thought discs were a very stable medium! I know cassettes are well past their expected lifespan, and cartridges are probably approaching theirs (sorry my childhood N64!) - but discs as well? I suppose time eventually gets to everything...
