Saw some postings about the site and after a LONG time over at TAZ I simply got tired of their games and looked for another admin home or two (settled here and over at Discussion Communities).
I've been playing with forum scripts since about 2011, got into XenForo in mid 2012 and have ran it pretty much on a site since then. Have played with most of the free scripts at one time or another and IPS and WoltLab from a few years ago. I like playing with stuff on sites.. never really concerned about "how many users can I get" as every site I have set up has been for me... and if others got a use.. great.
There are things with IPS and Woltlab that keep me from playing with them on a site to evaluate (cost for benefit being a major one).
Before that I ran a BBS on MS DOS 3.1/DESQview (QuickBBS/FrontDoor) and then a multi-line BBS on OS/2 with Binkley/2 & Maximus BBS when I was living in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Before moving from there I was NEC of NET 124 and HUB 6000. My site was one of the "top 10" for non-porn related BBS's in the DFW area.
The ironic thing is.. even back then just as now with forums... when I left the DFW area, someone else spun up a BBS using my BBS's "name" to try to pull users based upon it since most of the users found you by a published listing. So, in actuality.. much of what you see in the present day "fora" world has already been done in BBS land.

I've messed with Linux since Slackware came out in 1993... had (at great expense at the time) a separate computer set up simply to play with it - used my old Vendex HeadStart with a SCSI controller and a 40MB SCSI hard drive for the Linux/Slackware toy and spent about $4000 1987 USD - roughly 10,500 USD in todays dollars - to upgrade my BBS to more modern hardware, and that did NOT include the multiple modems @ around $1600 USD current dollars X 3 of them)

I have a tendency to spin up sites based upon my current interest... so that's one reason I have played with so many scripts... IPS was kind of a "let down" as they wanted to charge you for any domain change....
My current site was registered in 2018 when I first got my telescope equipment... and I ran it for a bit until I got frustrated with figuring out some aspects of the hardware (limitation of using a DSLR for captures on a scope instead of a dedicated astro camera)... but then once I got my "good cameras" back in and saw how fun it was, I spun the site back up.
I also have a site (another just for fun) running for a "nasty" hobby of mine... the joy of pipes and it's related legal tobacco.

So, as abrasive (and opinionated) as I can be... I HAVE been around this type of "community" for just a bit. Don't like it.. feel free to put me on ignore.
I don't mind helping others when I can... but, as I said, I can be somewhat abrasive (that has a lot to do with the direct dealings in life/death - seeing the loss of and taking it - that I've dealt with in my life) so I have a very limited tolerance of what I consider stupidity (just ask the idiots over on BASH)..
I don't put up with a lot of "game playing" and I'm usually fairly direct... you will definitely recognize my humor (when it rarely comes out) as it's rather dry.
I don't mind helping with OS related stuff... but when it's script related (when involving paid scripts) I tend to only support them on the official support site, even for those that I know that are running a valid license. I have been known to help those via conversation, but not in a general topical area.

I'm pushing 60... retired and don't put up with a lot of "game-playing". That goes back to my late teens though.
I work around the house and on our land, do astrophotography and RV travels and am currently working on getting our local schools involved in astronomy and a local astronomy group going (in addition to plans for each local school to have one). Currently the only provider of equipment is yours truly... I do have plans if it takes off to try going to a 501(c)3 and then getting some local donations.. that way the equipment can be used for the local group as well as the schools as I would like the local astronomy group to support them as "child groups". I don't really see our local schools investing much into the hard sciences as it doesn't contain the words "football", "baseball/softball", "basketball" or "volleyball".

Hey Tracy :) I know you've been here a while but wanted to welcome you to Admin Junkies since you posted your introduction! :)

It's great to learn more about you Tracy! I think it's awesome you're trying to get into a 501(c)3 putting back into the community is so important. We often see that in smaller towns where sports are the biggest factor and you're right, sciences don't get much notice. I hope you are able to take off with that!

Hi Tracy,

A belated welcome to you here on Admin Junkies - it's good to have you with us :)

It's a real shame so many online communities are plagued with egotistical admins and individuals on power-trips, with no real passion for the niche or industry that is webmaster'y these days. Owning, running and operating a forum is immense fun, but a lot of these existing sites zap that out of you with mundane and unnecessary drama. I hope you enjoy your time here on AJ focusing on topics and discussions, rather than all of that.

Look forward to engaging with you throughout the forum 💖
