I don't believe in doing it and I even have a story that relates to the subject.
There is a well known member here(I leave their name out of this but they can speak up and say who they are if they wish) who once did something rather dumb and foolish on a board and got themselves banned for it. There was no question the ban was justified on that board and that should have been the end of it but it wasn't. Then this person goes to a board I was staff on and joins up with no issues whatsoever. Well many of the staff of this other board were also members of this chat board and they made demands that this person be banned at this board for what he did over there and they weren't taking a no for an answer. I said no to their demand and it led to possibly the longest possible fight you could imagine that went on for hours involving one lone staff member being battered by half a dozen of them if not more over it. No matter how hard they hit and how long they went on for, I would not budge. I was not going to be bullied or pressured into going against my beliefs by anyone as it would not only compromise my ability to be a moderator but do serious damage to my character and reputation as well if I gave the word that I could be moved to go against what I believe to be true with any amount of pressure. The only beliefs you have that matter are the ones you are willing to defend. Until you demonstrated that you will defend it if attacked for it then no one will truly know if that is what you truly believe or not as beliefs govern your actions.
Why I don't believe in doing it? For one, doing it in one place doesn't mean you will do it elsewhere. Secondly, it applies a punishment that there can be a reasonable amount of doubt that it was justified which will damage the trust you have between people especially t hose who trust is not well founded yet. Thirdly, if someone does do it again on your board then you can cite the offense done elsewhere to show that the person did it then, wasn't sorry for it then and surely isn't sorry for it now seeing that they did it again. Not only do you have proof of misbehavior but also a pattern of it that will continue if not stopped by staff. Now there is no reasonable doubt that it wasn't justified and people can trust in your judgment as they can see the evidence for it themselves and see you made the right call which builds trust between you and your community which you may need one day for those times when you will have to be trusted without evidence and can only use the past situations where you demonstrated you were trustworthy to make the call if you should be trusted.
