Marketing and leadership guru Seth Godin once wrote,

“Leaders create the conditions where people choose new actions.
The choices are voluntary. They’re made by people who see a new landscape, new opportunities and new options.
You can’t make people change. But you can create an environment where they choose to.”

Are you creating a community and environment where people are choosing new actions? To do things differently?

I have two forums and one of them was created for helping people. I wanted to create a community where people could share information, learn from others, and get help. When I started the community, I had also dreamed of creating a crowdfunding platform where people could fund someone's projects or get funded. Since my community is about business and investment, I also thought about not just helping with information but also with money but sadly, my dream did not materialize.

Seth is a genius!

I agree with you on this. We should be making communities that encourage new actions through interesting discussions, leadership and engagement, and by providing the tools for our member to act.

Sometimes I wonder if forum admin communities - and this is very much an introspective reflection upon ourselves - are more about hanging out and a space to chill, or are we building learning communities to actually become better?

When I look at the universe of forum admins, most of them have been running their forums for 10 or 15 years; a lot of us are set in our ways.

Interesting for sure.

Hangout communities for forum admins, haha. I'm sure a lot of it, is just that. We're a skilled bunch for the most part.

I feel this is something many admin forums lack. It is great to see communities where webmasters can chill but we all love learning new things too and I'd love to see more of that!
We do need that.

How could we accomplish this, though? Maybe we should run experiments and do research projects to report our findings.

The first step would be to identify the biggest pain points of a forum owner and then target them for content, articles, and learning materials on the forum.

We're definitely helping new admins, but what about all of us experienced admins?

Running experiments and doing research would be a great place to start, I feel. You could also reach out to the community and ask them what they would be interested in learning or even seeing within the community to help them learn or even teach others what they already know.

Feedback is one of the most important analytics out there :) It's better than any of them, really.

This I agree with, no one knows better than your community on what they would like to see or what they are looking for and if you can get feedback from those, that leaves you in a better position to give them what they are looking for :)
