In year 6 meaning what exactly?

Year 6 is the year before Secondary School (I'm assuming High-school for you)

Iirc the British Education system is Reception, Y1/2/3/4/5/6 (Primary School) , Year 7 -12, Sixth Form and then College and then University. Its something like that anyway, I skipped the whole Year 12/6th form and went straight to college. xD

The Northern Ireland system is a bit different I think..
We go from P1-7 (Primary school) 1st year-7th year (Secondary school) etc
Might just be the way we word it, but the same system I guess.
And yes, I agree; Americans are weird. Just use the god damn European system!
