Writing songs

Are you a songwriter? If you are then how do you write your songs, lyrics first before melody or melody first? I am not a musician so my style is to write the lyrics in rhythm of a poem. When done with the lyrics that's the time to grope for the melody.

I always wanted to write the songs which people some day can pick up and make their own. But I mostly spent the time learning the FL Studio. I never managed to write few notes myself as of yet. So writing songs is one item that remained in the bucket list.

I am not a musician either but that is pretty much the style my friend had. It all started with someone asking to turn his poem into a song. It was interesting but my friend wanted to inject his own flavor since at the time he was also an avid guitar and harmonica player. He seemed to have a few times where the melody came first, but for the most part, it seemed common he had an idea or just a fraction of the lyrics, he'd sit down have the song first and then would fiddle with the guitar to give it rhythm and find the appropriate keys so it sounded sad or cheery as needed.
