I've noticed that XenForo has recently implemented a per-topic ban feature (removing the ability for users to reply in a specific topic). I remember having the vB3 mod for this on a forum which I adminned afew years ago and it didn't really come in that useful.

In my opinion, warnings should suffice for dealing with the situation where a user is derailing a topic.
If they don't listen to your warnings then, they probably aren't someone who you want on your forums anyway.

What are your thoughts on this?

Hmmm... This is such a tough issue. I guess if that member constantly posts off-topic ideas on that thread or maybe has gotten into a heated argument with someone, then this feature might be useful for the staff. They could just ban him or her off of that area. Of course, you would have to take into account if he's constantly disobeying the rules in other areas as well. If he is not, then it's safer to just ban him from posting in the said topic area.

But if the member has constantly broken the rules, for instance:

  • Posts spam
  • Goes off-topic for most threads
  • Argues with everyone in the forum
  • Uses offensive language
  • Posts senseless things
Then it might be time to ban him or her for good. You would need to warn him though the first or second time before banning him or her completely. In any case, banning them in a topic area or even off the whole forum need to be rationalised so you don't get some hate from the other members.

Good luck!
