This is something I have done on my forum and it has actually produced me a decent amount of money but it is used to put back into the forum and buy new plugins.

Have you ever tried running paid forum upgrades or just general paid upgrades on any site?

Yes, I mentioned this on another thread already. I do both upgrades and donations. I feel that is keeps people interested in the forum and members who stick around tend to want to invest because they love knowing they contributed some how to keeping things running.

If I had to choose, I would go with having a donation button. Anything else would scare people away, I think.
