A contest to get backlinks could drive a lot of traffic. However, if most or a lot of your backlinks seem to come from stuff like that, you should beware. Well, Google and probably other engines don't want the building of links manipulated by website owners. Instead, they want to see authority sites linking to your site - simply because they love the high-quality relevant content.

If you are using sites for backlink that gives a lot of do follow backlinks, article directory, web directory, etc. your backlinks will not have any value as search engines do not take note of link farms. If backlinks are coming from low quality sites, these backlinks do not helo you.
