I very rarely see SMF being used anymore. When I look at the official website, I don't see anything that MyBB or phpBB doesn't already offer me. It bears to the thought: is SMF even competitive anymore? Is there any reason to use it over MyBB or phpBB?

I think if they keep releasing new versions they will definitely keep their loyal fan base. Everybody has their favorite software, but all it takes is one bad release and people start looking for alternatives. They may not be as popular as they were, but I think they will hang in there.
