The reality is that the huge number of links isn't important, but rather what links they are. Nonetheless, I still think more quality links never coming from the same site would be an advantage. I don't think this article is saying otherwise.

Mueller also mentioned that even if a page has only one link from a major news site, that signal would be enough for Google to view it as a quality page.

Back in the day, numbers matter. These days, you want to have only quality links as having too many out there can actually hurt your site. I have learned that over the last few years. Some people still think quantity matters more though. They are using outdated methods and practices when it comes to backlinking.

backlinks will work only when they come from the sites that are ranked higher than yours, are form related sites (on the same niche) and are do follow backlinks created through anchor text (mainly keywords)
