In 2018, a research unit inside of Google named Jigsaw wanted to learn how conspiracy theories spread online. They decided to meet 40+ American and British conspiracy theorists face-to-face, so they could see firsthand how these conspiracy theorists got their information.
They were shocked by what they found.
They discovered that the very design elements we often associate with trustworthiness—slick, professional websites—were viewed suspiciously by conspiracy theorists. Instead, these theorists found "ugly" websites more credible, as they seemed less connected to mainstream or "establishment" sources.
