I saw this question on several forums without a proper answer when I checked for it. Anyway I got the answer and thought of sharing it here.

XenForo does offer an API through which we can check the validity of a license. You just have to go to this URL:
http://xenforo.com/api/
and enter the information which you get from the seller who sells the XenForo license.

You need to enter the domain name on which the software is being used as well as the secret token which the seller will be able to generate using the customer portal at Xenforo.com

If the license is valid, it will show that.
I have attached a Screenshot with this post which shows the details of a valid license check.

Ya, I have seen this when they first released it.

It actually was not that long ago. I now ask for a validation token anytime I'm going to buy a license.
The API however I can see being used in a lot of different ways. Such as theme shops having you enter in your domain and token prior to purchasing a theme to validate you own a xenforo software :D

There is an addon developer that uses this to verify that you actually own a Xenforo licence before you can even buy anything. I think it is a great idea and can stop people from downloading/buying your addons and theme just to rip the code and rerelease them for a higher price.
