How long did it take for your forum to get popular?

I heard that it takes about 6 months of active posting and promoting for a forum to get placed on Google and found by the general public. What are your experiences? Then does it take off on it's own or is it a constant battle to find and keep people?

My forum is yet to get popular, but then again I am not giving much attention to it lately (as I have other websites).

In my experience, a forum can get popular very quickly provided admin is active.
