Getting visitors, or let’s say traffic, it very important for the sustainability of your website. No matter what your purpose of running a website is, getting people to visit your website is important. There are various ways to get visitors on your website, for example:

  1. Search Engines
  2. Social Sites
  3. Forums, Blogs, Q&A Sites
  4. Email Marketing
  5. Paid Ads
Despite the existence of multiple methods to get visitors, getting people to visit your site is quite challenging. Just because you have done SEO, or are posting on social sites, or sending newsletters doesn't guarantee traffic. You get search engine traffic only when your website appears high on SERP for high traffic keywords. You can of course explore paid ads, you must realize, you will have a huge price to pay.

When you want immediate results with getting visitors to your website, your best bet is going to be through paid ads. They are very effective when it comes to driving traffic to your website but this isn't supposed to be the best way forward especially for someone who's still new to being a website owner. It's good to try and build your traffic organically over paying for ads all the time.

I try to promote my sites on many different promotional websites. I also like to post links on Facebook as well as Twitter from time to time to spread the word. I also use Youtube, though it's rarely. I also work on SEO tricks to help get my websites appear on the front page on Google and other search engines.

The impression that Facebook and other social media platforms kills forum is over exaggerated in my opinion. In as much as so many people have moved from forums to social media platforms because it's more free for them to behave as they like without any serious consequences, social media sites still helps forums to generate traffic by brining back those who are burnt out on social media platforms to forums.

I just want to point out that Google and other search engines are fundamentally a matchmaking service. Their purpose is to help funnel users to the sites that present the best, most authoritative, timely, or interesting information that the user searches for. They match users with content.

I know this question was written in the sense of what can we proactively do to get more members, but I think the emphasis is misplaced. Instead of asking how we can make Google better at its job (Google is very, very good at what it wants to do) , maybe we should emphasize what value we present to Google so that it funnels users to you.

And that is quality content.
The primary purpose of publishing content is to make people read it. They will do it only when they find value on it. As long as people are impressed with your content, Google and other search engines are also impressed with your content. IN other words, the top ranking content is not something Google likes, it is also the content that readers find useful

No "advertising" like most would think. Participate on other sites and if a topic comes up that might be addressed on my site, I'll link to it.
Between that and search engine, fairly happy with the discovery process.

Now, getting them to participate is another matter, but I think we all realize that the public is more a consumer than a generator now.

I slightly disagree that paid ads will always give you instant success. However, understanding your target audience and channelling the paid ads towards them will definitely work better unless you have a bigger budget to spend.

Paid ads will definitely bring traffic to your websites but what you're not going to be guaranteed is being able to convert any of those traffic to sales if you're trying to sell anything on your website. There's a difference between the two things.
