Forum management isn't something you do carelessly. It takes a lot of time, planning and even money especially if you have a long term plan on the project. It's why whoever that's not ready to go in full when starting a forum never stays in long and he or she crashes out.

When starting out your forum, do you think that it's necessary for you to have another co-admin immediately or did it take a while for you to run things by yourself before appointing one?

When starting a forum, it is not always necessary to have another co-admin immediately. It can be manageable to run things on your own initially, especially if the forum is small and the workload is manageable. As the forum grows and the responsibilities increase, it may be beneficial to appoint another co-admin or moderator to help with the management and moderation tasks.

I don't think you need a co-admin when you start a forum up. I've been to many forums where there was one admin. Sometimes these sites never see another admin. As long as you have the mods, you should be fine for the most part. It's fine to co-run a forum as admins though, many people do this. I know Bizdustry has a few admins. So it's not out of the ordinary.

I completely agree that the size of the forum or community plays a very big role in determining if it is going to be necessary for you to have a co-admin when you must have launched your platform immediately or handle everything by yourself because of the little workload that is required at the beginning of your journey.

Back from 2009 - 2017, I was the only admin on the forum and I would have moderators below me that helped with keeping the forum clean from spam and issues and helped with activity as well.

Since coming back in 2022 and also from 2014 I have been a co-admin on mine and my other halfs websites and he is also a co-admin on mine to help with any backend stuff and also help with the running and the upkeep of the forum.

I feel it depends on whether you need extra help and a co-admin would come in handy for you or if you feel you can handle it all in the beginning as to whether you start out with a co-admin or you end up waiting a little.

When the forum is new, there isn't usually too much to do in terms of carrying out administrator work which the size of the forum comes in play too. Also, the schedule of the forum owner plays it own part too. If they all fall in line with not having much to do, there's absolutely no need to have a co-admin.

It depends on your goal and also your skills. If you do not have big goals in terms of the member base, content quantity, and revenue, you can launch alone, otherwise, you can have a co-admin. If you do not have any skills related to community management, having a co-admin can be helpful.

Personally, I see it as a misplaced priority for someone who doesn't have any skills related to community management to invested in forum ownership. It's not like being in the business of buying and selling communities. When you need to build a community, without having the skills and depending on hiring a co-admins and other management staffs that can be helpful in managing the community doesn't sit well with me.
