I love to see badges on forums and also love coming up with ideas for badges that community members can earn by doing different tasks within the forum.
I don't use them on my forum, but they're nice to see sometimes when you can get a vision of a user's accomplishments through the use of the badges.
You guys are welcome to my two badges :p

This can increase the engagement of some users but I prefer to see the badges displayed on their profile page that in each post below their username.

On the one hand because it weighs down the design and on the other hand because somewhere it ranks people and some could be intimidated and it could hinder their engagement in the community.
