Once on a certain forum, the system "awarded" me a "spammer" badge for posting a lot of content. None of my posts were one-two liners and I made sure to provide enough value to the posts. If the posts provide value, do you still categorize making a lot of posts as spamming?

It may be flippant if you make a lot of posts in a short space of time, even if they’re valuable posts.

I was once jokingly dubbed “Spam Specialist“ at SMF for making 500 posts in 18 hours. (Support topics, yo.)

I see spam as posts that are just one liners or if the member only posts in the forum games section. I think the "spammer" badge is just a bit of a joke, perhaps whatever forum that is they could rename the badge to "post maniac" or something else since not everyone who posts a bunch is really considered a spammer unless their posts are low quality.

How do I define spam? Well, lets see. Spam is the internet abbreviation for "stupid pointless annoying messages" and that's all there is to it. If I'm sitting in a thread and someone has made more than 3 or more consecutive posts in that thread with messages that are irrelevant and no one else is partaking at all, they're spamming. Here's an example of spam on a forum I used to visit.

I wonder what spam stands for? I know it was a food before the net came into existence. It's not a very healthy food. ;)

Making a lot of posts that are valuable and high-quality content is not something I would classify as spam but that is just me.

I class spam as being someone who registers to a forum and makes no posts other than ones that advertise and are also posted numerous times within a short space of time.

For someone who posts quite a lot and has high-quality content, I would give them a top contributor award or badge over a spammer badge.

Backronym after the fact. The term was popularised in the 1970s for annoying and repetitive behaviour by a Monty Python sketch. (Also the TV series is where the Python language got its name from.)

The origin of the term reflects “specially processed American meat” if Hormel is to be believed.

But you can still make a stream of valuable posts that are considered spammy if you make them too quickly and regularly. Everyone’s definition is a little bit different.

I guess the definition really just depends on the forum you're posting on. What may matter on one forum may not matter on the next one.

Bingo, it’s all about the context.

Heck, if I were to post useful things about forum adminning on, say, a cross-stitch forum I suspect they might not care for it much…

To me, spam always falls back to the spammer promoting a link.

I think off-topic posts and spam are two different things.

So, spam is either a user blatantly creating a post that advertises their link or those who create a post with a one-liner message that is not engaging and does nothing for quality contributions, but they have a signature link.

That's typically how I define a spammer.

Stupid Pointless Annoying Messages 👀

But really, it seems spam mostly falls under trying to advertise a website where not allowed. Most other spam is probably closer to trolling, but I suppose that all depends on the type of content at hand. People mass posting one-liners or just random gibberish could be defined as spam as well. There are many different types of spam, so it's hard to define them in one instance.

You stole my idea! hehe I like fried spam. As for the other meaning, I see it as unsolicited e-mails, scams, and other BS. o_O
