Backlinks can be divided into two categories, do-follow and no-follow. Do-follow means the link tells the search engines to follow the link, however, no-follow links do not tell search engines to follow the link. When links tell search engines to follow the link, it will pass link juice, thus helping the website to rank better, however, this does not happen with no-follow links.

I don't have a blog or Website I am promoting currently but If I am promoting I would use the do-follow link.

What is the essence of having no-follow links then? Is it meant for visitors to the site only, or it helps in internal SEO?

No, i will not recommend for only do follow links because its not good SEO practice. You should go with natural link building process and with natural link building you will get noth types of backlinks (Do Follow and No Follow). Both links are helping in ranking.

If any website is using no follow for links means that website is a bit poupular and can give you good amount of traffics and if you are getting hits from there and from different IP and geographical location on regular basis means you are getting attentions of search engines also.

So, for good SEO practice both links are important.
