Converting unpaid subscribers?

What are some of the best methods for convincing for members to subscribe to paid forums, newsletters and other similar ways of monetizing a forum? I would love to build a larger scale forum, and I definitely think it's possible, but it doesn't seem like there's a lot of information about converting in this regard. Thoughts?
