Being self-sufficient online - How realistic is it?

What I mean by this is being able to not have to worry about someone else or some other company pulling the plug on your project. If Amazon decides they don't like you yet you run your website on their network they can just pull the plug. How realistic is it to pull away from this and be a site that is run and managed on networks, software, and systems all your own?

As long as you have enough funds to pay for hosting and everything I am sure you will be fine. Other than that if you don't cause trouble then you should be fine. But freedom of speech is quite good online, unless you are with a big company. If you are then you obey their rules.
