This is a good point. The reason why you are starting a business will attribute to your passion as well and that can be a major motivating factor for many people as well.
 
Before starting any business there are number of questions you must answers otherwise you will regret starting it. Why do you need to start the business in the first place? What will happen or what with you do if the business did not come as expect it? Do you have a plan B of it failed? And so many questions.
 
What's your WHY'S?? Make a list of all the reasons WHY you want to start your own business. Go through them one at a time. Look for a WHY that is powerful enough to withstand adversity and compelling enough to survive a significant loss in quality of life in other areas. Your WHY might be linked to a specific concept you desire to bring to life. The cause for which you are fighting. The fire that fires within you.

Nice tips you've got op. Failure of some individuals to ask themselves such questions, is the reason why startups dont make it to a good level.
 
You need to ask yourself that who are your competitors and come up with a plan on how to beat them to their games. Come up with competitive advantage to beat them to have more share in the marketplace.

I agree that capital is the most important element when making a start up. My advice now based on my sad experience is to have a capital that is double of the amount that you have estimated for your needs in the start up. That extra capital will give you the confidence that you have enough funds so the operation will be smooth.

This will be the best thing but sometimes some people may not have enough money to start the business talk less of having double of what the business demand, don't you think we can manage the normal estimated amount ?
 
Why do I want to start a business?
Can this business idea make me money now and in the future?
Who is my target audience for my business?
Who are my competitors?
How will I market my business?
How will I price my products?
 
This is really a good thing to do if one wants to start or setup a business. With this method, a lot of people will have headway for their business in times of challenges
