Are forums dying?

Advertisement Placeholder
This question seems to be brought up every couple of years I feel. Personally speaking, I don't think that forums are dying. There are certainly other online outlets for people to go to and utilize, but I think there are still a lot of forums out there and being created. They just may not be advertised as much as they used to be.

I agree, but it is a question that is brought up a lot. Social media has been around for a long time already, yet forums are still around and many are going very strong still.

I don't think they're dying although the ebb and flow and right now I see a big ebb. One thing though that keeps coming back to my mind is that forums have changed a lot since I was first introduced to them 25 years ago. I used to belong to a community dial up forum run by the local newspaper. It was actually a hit but the paper didn't want to fund it and refused to sell it to the members who wanted to keep it alive.

Some of the things we can do now that we couldn't do back then is to put video, music and even photos in our posts.

What kept the people returning and so loyal to the site was the constant interaction and the feeling that others really cared that you were online and posting. We had chats (public and private) along with the threads. There wasn't a lot of fighting but there was way too much gossip for my liking and a few couples ended in divorce because of the site.

What needs to happen to keep forums going is to keep on the path of allowing change and the ability to adapt to new technology.

Yep, they are dead and we are talking on corpses :p

But really, I know they aren't as big as they were years ago, thanks to discord and other platforms, forums have been cut down in size for sure. But I think they will live for years to come.

Maybe they are dying but I think there is still space for smaller communities. If you can get a good group of members that like to talk with each other, forums can still do a good enough job. Social media is good but it still doesn't have the same community feeling that you can get with a forum.

I think, no matter how else people like to picture it, forums ARE DYING.

With more and more users trying to go into social media handles, instant messaging applications, forums are no longer being adapted to the way people wants to contribute to the cyber world.

People hate the way the moderation happens, the way in which it is displayed and the feeble rate at which new content is being added.

The ones flourishing now are those that has a consistent and mature userbase. I hope something comes up and turns the tide in our favour.

This is a very good question. I was wondering the same thing. After thinking about it, I really do believe forums are dying because more people are using Discord, Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp, etc. to have group chats instead of forums. They are easier and you are guaranteed fast responses and immediate responses. People don't like to wait for anything, it is human nature. So why would we post on forms that could not have replies for hours versus any social media where we will get that interaction NOW.

I think that forums are getting increasingly popular at the moment because there is a lot of people that are relying on this in order to see if there is a legit site or not.

Yes I would say since blogging keep changing and have social media presence, Forum is not that popular which it used too specially people now find answers somewhere else so not active like used to.

People may tend to rely on a search engine in order to find the answer however i think that if you look at the forums there is many people that come here to see people's experience on a site.

Forums are older than social media sites, but sadly forums never grow big just like social media sites. However, I don't see forums dying even though they are not as popular as they were a couple of years ago. Forums have lost their user base.
