Would you rehire a staff member who tried to harm your site?

Probably not, unless there was some kind of good communication between me and the person who did harm. I believe we all let the worse out of ourself sometimes, so if an apology is due and it’s sincere, (however that’s the hard thing about internet as you never know how sincere they are) then I could re-hire under a few terms.

There's a bridge we can't come back from no matter how much we try to make up. The moment you get to the point where you want to see my community burn because of our issues, that's the end of our relationship in any way.

I wouldn't rehire a person that tried to sabotage my community. Once they broke that trust, there's no coming back from it. I would be afraid if that I gave them a second chance, they would come back and sabotage my community again.

I'm with the both of you. How does that saying go about fool me once...?

I was never a staff member of the official ZetaBoards support forum, but I did sabotage it once by mass spamming users' inboxes there after a staff member severely ticked me off. I was banned for quite a long while, but one day I was unbanned due to some changes in the system, and the staff not bothering to re-ban me because I was already an active member of the official resource board, most likely. I contributed dearly to the Zathyus Networks throughout my time there, but I also made some muck ups along the way. In the end, I prevailed in showing my contributions to the network and went to another forum software world (Jcink) and been holding strong with Jcink ever since I've been a part of it.

With that being said, I believe people can muck up once or twice (Three strikes you're out?) and still prove themselves worthy in the end. It depends on different factors too, like what a person could be experiencing personally at the time, the users' age, and possibly the reason behind the sabotaging. I was young and immature at the time of the aforementioned and was going through some serious life issues at the time, but should that excuse me from my behavior? Not necessarily, but if I can re-prove my worth through contributions, responsibility, and civility then I could understand being given a second chance. But as I mentioned in the parentheses above, three strikes and you're possibly out of the picture, meaning if you try and sabotage a community consistently enough, then you have proven yourself unworthy of such a position and title amongst the forum.

Generally no, since it's likely I would outright ban that staff member for harming my site in the first place and wouldn't let them back even as a member. Even without staff powers that same person could still do harm in other ways, which might even be harder to track, such as going to old posts and editing them with illegal content (I had a staff member do this to me once when I told them to not post something due to it breaking ToS).

There's a reason that there is an old saying.
Fool me once, shame on you... fool me twice, shame on me
.

This is a difficult one! If the person left under bad terms due to a previous altercation with individuals no longer on the team, then yes, I would rehire them. Understandably people get on differently in different dynamics so that would have to be considered before making any decision on their suitability. I'm typically not a fan of 'Do Not Hire' / blacklists for this reason - they're far too stuck in the past. Far better to have good staff tracking threads where reasons for leaving are clear, and such threads can be used for future decisions

Yes and no. Something like hacking or scamming with the intent to harm, in my eyes, is unforgivable. In Cory's example, I absolutely would, because it's pretty obvious that isn't his character. If I knew the person, or they were obviously active on another board and staying out of trouble, I wouldn't have an issue rehiring them as long as they simply did something that was provoked and out of character with obvious growth by them since then.
