There are billions of websites in the world. According to some data, many websites stay inactive for a very long time. This does not mean that all websites are inactive. However, most of the websites remain inactive. Why is this so? What are your thoughts?

website remains inactive when the developers stop working on the website or when the intended result they desired is not forthcoming, they tend to live the website totally for some other project

Many websites are dormant owing to a lack of resources, enthusiasm, or time to keep them up to date. Furthermore, some webpages may be dormant due to a lack of experience or expertise of the critical facets of website upkeep .

I once sold a website to a client. I sometimes check websites I have sold. This website has not updated any content, yet it is running for more than 4 websites. There are no ads, so owner is not even earning. I think websites are abandoned because priorities change

Yes there are allot of website out there, but out of the millions I think only few are active, I think the issue of website been active depends on the owner, some people tends to create website and won't be creating contents to make it active.

I agree with you that priorities change, and some other things might take your attention or at that time you might be going through a lot and not have the necessary time for the project

The website will be running up until the domain is valid and hosting is paid. The moment the owner stops renewing the domain and hosting, the website will be shut down. Some people renew for multiple years, so despite not updating, the sites continue to be running.

I think a website will become inactive when either it's domain or hosting expired or both. Every website, unless the one created with free platform, need a domain and, depending on the owners, hosting. This two has expired date. The minimum you can own a domain is 1 year and the maximum is 10 years. Once either of the two or both expired, the website will be inactive.

Some websites are inactive because nobody is coming to visit again especially the owner. A website can die through many reasons such as death of a owner of a website, bankruptcy, loosing interest in such site and the rest. However there is need to totally eradicate any website that stop functioning for six months.

Inactivity of websites could be owned to some factors like not adding of new contents, not having time for upgrades, shift of priorities, or even addition of two many unnecessary advertisement which could piss off the users. I myself have left so many website for others with so many unnecessary advertisements. The issue of not adding content could make the site look old and less attractive too. I have also seen a site which was formally used for dating and latter changed to a product marketing site. This made so many people pulled out of that site.

It depends on the owner of the site though, most websites are inactive due to a very busy schedule of the owner. The owner might be so lazy that they do not have time to update the site.

In my opinion most of the websites are created in order to generate money but when they are not generating good amount of money then they would become inactive.

Some websites to remain inactive because their accounts have been banned by Google adsense and some of them remain inactive because they are not being managed by the owner very well

you are right, the owner of the website might become busy with some other stuffs and would not dedicate a lot of time to building or updating his or her website.

Website functioning depend on the owners. Some of the owners, like you said, created their website to make money and when the site did not generate money for them, they will abaddon it. Once a website is not being updated again, it'll likely become inactive.

Creating and maintaining an active website requires ongoing effort, dedication, and attention to detail.

There can be many reasons why websites remain inactive, including lack of time or resources, lack of motivation, poor planning, lack of marketing, and changes in the market.
