When your site is on a shared IP

What is Google's stance on sites that share an IP address with any other website? How does Google distinguish between illegal/blackhat activities done for the other site, versus the activities you are doing for SEO for your own site? After all they are on a shared IP, so couldn't you get blamed for what another webmaster is doing?
