I guess you should hire a manager for your business when you are planning not to be in that position yourself. This might be a case of you travelling or probably opening another branch for the business elsewhere and the likes.
 
Having a manager is very good most especially when you realise that your company is expanding and you need a particular kind of oversight for you when you are not around or weed in that vicinity.
