When does a thread get too long?

The Social Lounge threads often get to 2000+ pages. Sometimes I've seen those threads retired, and a new one started.

If the thread is able to stay on topic and is able to still have a conversation/discussion then I think it can stay open. The hope for forums is to allow true in depth conversations about content.
