Some companies and artists (as in musical acts) don't like free downloads, game hacks etc, even when it doesn't financially hurt them. Well, free downloads have hurt the music industry, though.

Well, are they justified feeling that way?

I can understand artists not happy with free music downloads. ROM hacks are a completely different thing though, so I don't like Nintendo as a company because of their stance on hacks. If a person isn't making money off a rom hack of a old game then it shouldn't matter. In fact, Sega is better because they allow rom hacks and even hired Sonic fans to work on official Sonic games! ROM hacks don't hurt the sales of games that are no longer being produced. If it's a rom hack of a modern game, it'll bring in more sales too depending on the platform since people would have to purchase the official game to mod it.
