I have a forum built on SMF. I have never used Xenforo for myself but I have been a staff on a lot of forums built on Xenforo. Well, the premium forum software certainly has some advantage, however, I believe SMF is as good as Xenforo. What do you think?

SMF Vs. XenForo

I used SMF for a while.
My previous Another Admin Forum was born on SMF. I eventually upgraded it to XenForo.
Personally, I like XF better than all of them because of the features it provides. I like being able to do more customizations.
However, SMF is still releasing and going in the right direction. I just think they need a look and feel update.
