SEO in layman's terms

My knowledge of SEO is very limited. Can somebody break it down in layman's terms? How beneficial is SEO to having your own forum, blog, or site? I'm on Proboards & was told that if we have a forum that is Guests Must Login, search bots can't do their job. How accurate is this? Thank you for this help!
