PM advertisements, anyone?

It's annoying, it's creepy and it generally goes under the radar of staff because there's no obvious way to tell it's happening unless the recipient reports it. It's definitely been why a bunch of places don't let new members PM anyone else.

This happened to you and you bothered joining my forum. Congratulations :D
On hold on, maybe I shouldn't have pointed that one out :p
Especially since it’s against our guidelines lol.

Regardless I’m going to return to the topic.

Pm advertising in my opinion is the slick way of doing it. I would use the given tools that are provided. There are ways to talk to people in hopes they may join without bluntly asking them
To join via pm. People deserve a sense of not being harassed, if you create a thread in the promotion areas, partake in exchanges, that allows someone the choice to view a given website. Even using a signature to advertise is another great tool. It bothers me a lot when people aren’t respectful of others or rules.

I messaged him on his own forum LOL
We’re friends :p

Just about any site would not allow it ;) I do not allow it on my end, and worse of all you as the staff wouldn't even know about it unless it gets reported. I mean I know some plugins allow staff members to see every single PM. But that's creepy and also spying and I never had that in place.

But who knows I have no clue if it has happened or not lol.

Also site owners can see PMs in the database ;) I wonder whether snooping in this way would breach GDPR regulations, given that the data is not said to b encrypted in the privacy policy.

If that's the case they would have to have it said on the privacy/terms page and inform the members about it

Again who reads them :p

When it comes to a member who tends to PM people on a forum and gives them the link to their blog, forum or site that is something I do not tolerate unless it was an agreement before hand to allow them to do it such as say if someone was a sponsor of the forum.

This is not only rude but it can also be seen badly by those on the forum who receive the message as well and often leads to it looking bad for the forum in question. I personally report these my self on forums if I receive them and I encourage members to report them as well if they get them so we can deal with it as soon as possible.

Yeah of course it's a tough line to draw if it's a friend, it's just not something you'd naturally do if it were mid-convo. Whereas if it's from a complete stranger, then yes, screams spammer! :p
