I played piano as a child, but I never really understood rhythm until I played drums (in high school). Well, the piano teacher never emphasized it. Anyway, I think that's a problem with solo instruments, but of course, anyone in a band class - has to know rhythm.

I started to learn piano and rhythm at the same time. When I was learning, my teacher emphasized every aspect of the instrument, which include finger placement, theory, and rhythm. For example, when I'd play my teacher would have the metronome on and started over anytime I got off beat. It really helped ease the transition when I went into middle school band and then high school.

I wonder how you shifted from the piano into the drums. But I know one guy who was a wizard with the guitar and it was a surprise when he shifted to the keyboard. Now he is a keyboardist of their band. Maybe you have a good aptitude in maintaining the rhythm of the beat.
