In your opinion, what are some of the most useful phppBB mods? Are there any that you automatically install on your new forums? Are they free or premium mods?

Two of my personal favorites:

Anti-Bot Question
The administrator could add a security question on registration form as a way to stop bots from registering.

Advertisement Management
This is a quite powerful mod. It allows you to create new ad positions on the forum, counts stats and allows setting limits to number of views of the ads.

Advertisement Placeholder
Advertisement management is a personal favorite of mine as well.

I'd say Ultimate Points should always be considered for lists like this. Not all forums are going to need to have their own virtual currency, but it seems to be an expectation for forums in the webmaster/promotion genre. Actually, I feel like we're one of the few webmaster forums that doesn't have a points system. There's also the topic attributes MOD, the default avatar MOD, and the reputation MOD. All three are useful MODs that I have seen on tons of phpBB forums.

The most useful phpBB mod for phpBB 3.1 is Caramel, with a close second to Comma Stats. Caramel is the only real cash extension for phpBB, and Comma Stats is the only MOD that allows commas throughout your forum. If you don't use it, your forum will be a mess.

I personally love Avatar on Last post, though I love the media embed. Forget custom BBCode's for Spotify and what not. :p

Do you guys use anything to keep URLs looking tidy? I'm currently using the PrettyURLs alpha build which works but I'm currently looking for something a little more feature-rich, if that even exists.

Also, how did you guys get AutoMOD working in version 3.1? When I tried installing, it gave me an error on the /install page.

If I'm not mistaken, there isn't an AutoMOD for 3.1. The process of installing extensions is already automatic now. There's no need for AutoMOD.

I see, I had no idea about that, that's quite interesting although I don't think I will be upgrading soon because I need a mod for automod to keep working. It's called WP-United. It keeps the Wordpress users and phpBB users in sync. If anyone knows of a decent alternative, let me know.

Thanks for the info, Cameron.

You're welcome. You'd probably need to have a developer do custom work to have WP-United working on phpBB 3.1. I don't know of any WordPress integration extensions that have been released since 3.1 came out.
