Do you optimize you website for mobile? It seems that everyone is browsing the web nowadays with their smartphones or tablets. It would be common sense to cater to them now. And I've also heard that Google is factoring mobile optimization when ranking websites in their search.

Google is penalizing sites for no mobile optimization on their sites. I think now it's almost essential to do it. It is not even that hard to do.

Yes now google is ranking sites based on being mobile friendly. Most of them I have seen that they use smart phone for searching purposes. As John said it is easy to do mobile optimization.

Responsive sites tend to have a better rating and ranking, according to Google. With the modern era of mobiles, tablets, etc; it is pretty compulsory for your website to be mobile friendly unless ofcourse you have a different way which covers mobiles & tablets up such as a separate mobile theme or perhaps an app.

Having a mobile site is pretty much a must need for every site nowadays, it just is. From phones and tablets being so popular, and so many people browse on their phones nowadays if you don't have a optimized site for mobile, you're not going to get as many visitors and Google will come knocking with penalties. It's just the new normal nowadays, there's no escaping it. :p

I didn't know Google was penalizing websites with no mobile friendly optimisation. My last forum wasn't mobile friendly. It wasn't listed that high up in the search engines, and it was reasonably active too. I guess this could be why, I didn't know this, I have learned something today about SEO.
