Is it possible to get scammed through escrow system?

Escrow system is a kind of system which is used by businesses. However, I have always wondered how it actually works. Do the customer need to deposit the money up front? Let's say if a customer pays for a product and approves the payment, but after some time, they believe that they were scammed. In that case, would it be possible for the escrow system to get the money back if the scammers has withdrawn money?

When you buy something and use escrow payment, you release your payment only after you are satisfied, when you sell something, you will deliver your work only when your funds are secured by escrow. Therefore, the chances of getting scammed are negligible. I have been using escrow for a long time and never experienced any issues.
