Images in Forums

Could having lots of images on a forum be good for SEO purposes? For example- people may be searching for a certain celeb and they find it on G images linking to your topic. Would you need to have the image stored on your server for this to work?

Unless you can set alt tags, I don't think images serve much purpose in terms of SEO.
