We're lucky to have so many webmasters among us here at AJ so, I feel it would be great if we have some great tips or guides to start a full time/part time career as a webmaster?
What does it take to get a job in this domain? Can someone's experience as an admin/moderator in free forums be valuable enough to get a job? If someone has to prepare a resume, what are few must-have skills that can help the candidate in standing out?

Feel free to add more points apart from the ones flowing through the mentioned questions. Let's use this thread to construct a proper roadmap! 😊

If you've got experience with working with databases, you could definitely launch a career as a webmaster. Also if you've got coding skills and possibly some knowledge when it comes to running a business you can even have a hosting company too. Simply even knowing how to install forum software can earn you some extra cash on the side. Some paid software offer installation fees that are almost as much as the software itself! You could help those needing installation done but don't have the extra money.

Great! Talking about coding skills, which programming languages can work? Will Python do? Or they need to have knowledge on HTML, CSS and JavaScript? Also, If someone wants to learn about or get a training on how to install forum software, where should they head?

Webmaster is a term that dates back to the time when a single, tech-savvy person could run a company's website, and CMSes weren't that common. Today, the webmaster role is largely obsolete. Entire teams manage websites, with specialized individual roles. I do think small companies could benefit from a good, modern webmaster. A good webmaster knows their way around web technology and has a good grasp of basic usability and accessibility. She/he is also ideally placed to choose specialized partners for hosting, custom development, etc. Imho, that's what a webmaster should be in 2018: a multi-skilled, web-oriented individual who makes sure a company's websites are in good working order.
