How to Get Free Followers on Twitter:

First of all, let me educate a little bit on just what is Twitter and how you can utlilise it to get more traffic to your blog/site or forum.

What is Twitter:
Twitter is a Micro-blogging platform where you can write something within a 140 character limit and post for all your lovely followers to see. This post or ‘Tweet’ as it is known on Twitter will be show to all your ‘Followers’. Followers are the people who have added you and all your status updates will be visible for them on their own personal Twitter homepage.

You can also follow the people that you want to follow to keep up to date with their own tweets; this includes your friends, sites or even the odd celebrity.

The more followers you have the exposure your tweets/content will get naturally as 100 people seeing your content is better than 10 right? Twitter allows its users to re-post or ‘re-tweet’ content they see from across the Twitter-sphere to their own personal followers. This means that if your content was to be re-tweeted by a user with 1000 followers, a 1000 extra people will see your content. Nifty right?

How to get traffic from Twitter:

Within this article, we are not going to cover all the many different methods in which you can use Twitter to increase the traffic on your site, this will be covered in another article at a later date.

If you cast your mind back to the beginning of this article, you may remember me saying that the more people following you, the more people who will see your content and this is what we want to achieve.

Naturally, as you attain followers, it would be in your best interests to engage them individually but unfortunately, this can’t happen but what you can do is engage all of them with content and content is key on Twitter. If you post boring tweets about your dinner, who will be interested? As a site owner, you should be posting key content from your site to get them to visit your site or even news concerning the niche you are in. Remember though, provide links to these sites or even your own site, how else will they know where to go for their dose of brilliant news if you don’t provide that?

Now because of the above, people are starting to visit your site daily. Your content is attracting people from Twitter to visit your site, awesome right? Many sites these days have thousands of followers and even scratching the surface with 10% of them turning into website traffic is a great achievement. Let’s say you have 10,000 Twitter followers and 10% of them visit your site, which are 1000 extra visits you wouldn’t have had without Twitter!

To take this one step further, imagine that those 10% of your followers started re-tweeting your content to their own followers; this could translate into even more visitors for your site! With the average Twitter-er having 120 followers, that is an extra 120 people who will learn about your site and if you times that by 1000, well, you will be a happy little website owner.
If you post good, strong content regularly and engage your users, your possibilities are endless.

How to get Followers on Twitter:

Within this section, I am going to explain three methods to gaining followers on Twitter.

1. The long way – Posting/Tweeting interesting content
2. Buy follower (Cheating!)
3. The Free way – Follower exchange sites

The Long Way:

This is the long method simply because you have to wait for people to find you and follow you and it really depends upon the content you’re posting. This is more for people with a personal Twitter account as opposed to a business account. If you’re a business and you’re choosing this method, you will be waiting quite a while for your account to take off unless you post controversial and gripping content that attracts a wide range of people, never the less, I would advise against doing this method upon your business account.

Buying Followers:

Nowadays, many people tend to boost their numbers quickly by buying followers for their account. There are a lot of people around the internet who offer you hundreds or even thousands of followers in exchange for a small amount of money. You can visit microjob sites like SEOClerks and Fiverr to get an idea of how much it can cost you to boost your numbers within a day.

The problems with buying followers are:
1. The majority of the time, the ‘followers’ will be fake and they do not respond to your updates/content.
2. As time goes on, you will find that your followers will slowly decline and this is due to Twitter sounding out these fake accounts and deleting them.
3. People do not tend to follow profiles with thousands of people following the account but the account itself is not following many people in return. Most people will view this as you have bought your followers and as such, will not go near you.

There are some advantages for buying followers however, these are:
1. It gives people a positive impression as it looks like you have a strong online following.
2. It can make some people (real people!) follow your profile for updates but please, do not forget to return the favour!
3. It removes the trouble and time constraints that come with a new Twitter profile.

My opinion is that whilst you can buy followers, buy them in small chunks and not so often. Constantly buying them will look suspicious and may backfire in the future.

The Free Way:
Don’t we all love some freebies and getting something in return? Then you’re in for a treat with this method. Like all free methods however, you do have to put in a bit of work to get your rewards.

1. Use the “Twitter Advanced Search” option (https://Twitter.com/#!/search-advanced) to get people from a targeted niche as opposed to a random array of people. Search for your niche and look at the number of people an account follows. If you see the number of people they follow and their followers to be almost the same then follow them. They will most likely reciprocate and follow you back!

2. Search for “Twitter Hash tags” which are similar to “#IFOLLOWBACK” or “TEAMFOLLOWBACK” . If you re-tweet some of those tweets which contain these hash tags, you are essentially telling people that you want them to follow you back or you will follow them. This will get attention from people who want to increase their followers. Follow the people who have already tweeted with such hash tags so that they will more than likely follow you back.(Trust us, this works!). Also, try to ensure that you follow all those people who have decided to follow you and mention them in a tweet saying thanks and saying you have followed them back (Just to add a nice personal touch and also, it looks good on you!). Be sure to add those hash tags we mentioned earlier to these tweets. You could also ask some of your followers to re-tweet your tweets or ask them to give a #shoutout(A way of letting their followers know that you’re worth following!)

3. You can also use social exchange sites such as www.youlikehits.com andwww.followpluslike.com to exchange followers. But you have to be careful here as some people tend to unfollow you after they have gained their share of followers.

Note: I am attaching a PDF file with a list of peoples/profiles that will definitely follow you back. The list has around 40,000 twitter profiles.
If you want to add your name into this list or want to let us know some profiles in case they haven’t followed you back, please do that by commenting here

One more thing about buying followers: It's against Twitter's ToS and can get your account suspended.

The long way is definitely the best way. I find that holding a contest is a good way to obtain interest for your Twitter account. Hold a giveaway with a prize related to your niche and watch everyone share your tweets!
