These forums make a lot of money from running paid or sponsored advertising on their forums. They also earn from Google adsense when they start getting heavy traffic everyday. These are the two major ways through which they earn money.

Forums make lots of money these days through advert sponsored as I have likely said in your comment the major ways that forums make money out from Google payments and getting heavy traffic on yeah site.

It depends on the popularity of the forum and the Alexa rank I think. With more ads from Google Adsense , the earning will be there. Apart from Ads , sponsors also pay money to the forum owners , or the direct advertisers.

I think most forums that have great ranking on google are acquiring it from the following sources:

1. Direct Advertisers

2. Membership Upgrades

3. Google AdSense

4. Marketplace

As I would see it a forum should search for novel and unique ways to maximize profit.

Money made by the forum owners cannot be easily calculated because there are different channels through which they can generate revenue from their forum. Some of the ways they can generate revenue is through membership upgrade, direct advertising, ads and other interesting means.

I am not sure, But I think a forum that has over 100,000 members for example beer forum can earn a lot of money from ads, I believe ths forum s also earning well.

I believe no single individual can say or tell how much money forums makes at the cost of their operation as a business operating company if you are not working with them to some extent you will not have a very good idea about that but all to be know by all is that they make a good amount of money.

I will agree with the good Rankin and money making aspect of mist forums you stated above. It is true that they make their wealth of money on their forums through advertising, offering membership upgrades, and google adsense as well.

I use to also wonder how most forums that give out usually warn back in return. I guess most of them mainly earn from ads and maybe based on the number of traffic on the forum.

Though I don't have any forum at the moment, but I do know that with proper contents and ads put in place forum owners can earn so much running such forum. And there are so many kinds of ad forum can use to generate income. The one I like most is the one that pays just by opening the page for the ad to display even without clicking the ads. It is just my opinion though.
