How do you handle moderation duties and warnings?

There are a lot of forums that are out there and therefore there is also a lot of people that are looking to take advantage of the system that is put in place as well and i think that this can be very worrying for the forum creator. What sort of methods do you employ on your moderation duties for people that are abusing your forum rules? Do you give them a warning and let it slide the first few times or do you go for an immediate ban?

Moderator's job is to keep the forum safe and encourage constructive debate. Remove any comment that the moderator thinks breaches the rules of the forum. The account could be suspended temporarily with a prior warning/notice to the participant who repeatedly breaks the rules or block that participant permanently depending on the severity of the matter.
 
I have a set of basic rules. The main three are no spamming or spam of any kind, no personal attacks against other members (disagreements should be expected, it is a forum after all), and no pornography. I guess it depends on the niche but I am sure other forums require far more rules to keep things in order. I work on a points system. Temp bans will be handed out after so many points.

I think that these three rules are probably able to cover everything that should not happen in a forum because if you are spamming then it is an indication of low quality posts, which is a definite no in all forums.

Exactly. I find it easier to have fewer rules. People are able to get a grasp on what is and is no acceptable easier. If you have a long wall of text for your rules, it will put people off. I have been on forums that legit had 5 pages worth of text just for rules. Not a good look!

That is generally the case when it comes to websites that you have a lot of rules and regulations because people do not actually want to go through the formalities they actually just want to get involved with the website and try to earn as fast as possible.

I know some forum owners try to compete with social media in a way of making their rules and terms pages like theirs. I don't know if you ever looked at those on Twitter, Facebook, etc. but they are so long and passive. It is a wall of text that basically says they can do as they damn well please. lol
 
If a minor problems or spamming than I warn them before take any strict action but if it is serious issues than I'll ban them immediately and if they are spamming than I block them as well ban the IP too.

If you have a lot of rules and regulations then you will see that people generally tend to skip over there and as a result they tend to make the same mistakes over and over and over however I think that if you have a few simple ones people are more likely to read it and abide by it as far as they can.

That is another thing. You put all this effort into a huge list of rules and such, and how many people actually read them? A good example is Twitter again. When they decide to ban someone, they can do so. It is in their website agreement but people act shocked when they do.

I do agree with you and i think that i have spent a lot of time on these sites however i have never actually taken the time in order to read the rules. I kind of just wing it and hope for the best because it is long and tedious.
 
I think I am strict. I do not send warnings on the issues that are already clear in the terms of use. For instance, copying content, publishing AI content, and harassing users are prohibited, and if someone is found doing this, I do not send reminders, I just send warnings.
