Did you get a loan of money? from your parents, or did you save up your money? and have you been able to pay back these loans.

Me personally I had a part time job and thats how I started my forum up.

I just spent my month's wage. xD I only work part-time so it was a lot for me, but I figured it be worth it.
...and now I'm concerned about earning the money back because AdSense isn't allowed on my forum and that was to be my main source of revenue. xD

What is your forum niche?
Depending on that you could, try several other monetization methods too! Have you tried publicity clerks?

General discussion and advice; I know, I've heard it's a hard niche to get into. That, and I'm completely inexperienced (well, I had a phpbb forum ages ago but that was just for a gaming team).
I've seen it and have created an account; need a banner though before I bother submitting us to any sites. I guess I could list us as a publisher but I doubt many people would want to advertise on our forums just yet. Besides, most seem to be just webmasters which I doubt would have interest anyway.

There was this time a long, long time ago when I made a forum through a free service called ProBoards. But that was years ago. I don't know if they still allow people to do it for free. But I figured that all the TOS that I had to comply with just wasn't worth it so I deleted the forum thereafter.

I didn't really need a loan or anything, but rather I earned a couple of money from working online, primarily through writing articles in decent sites, and within no time, I was able to save enough and start my own forum :)

I earn money from online, I used that money to buy a domain name for my forum.

I do not have to pay for hosting, as I use createaforum.com's platform (which is free).
