How about phpBB?

I feel like PhpBB is still going strong, maybe not as strong as they were in the past(which is true for most), but it is still going. The default theme is alright, the theme selection is large, the mod selection is large, and the overall support is still pretty good. I still find the ACP comes with a learning curve, but it is powerful.

What is difficult with the ACP? It seems easy for a newbie.

When compared to let's say SMF, there is more depth. One example would be permissions, it is in depth with the many levels it has, but can be confusing to a newbie. I know I was confused when I first tried it.

There is a positive to that though, you can be more specific on what you want specific users or groups to be able to do.

Another example would be the post settings. You have a-lot more options to work with compared to SMF. That can be can be overwhelming to new admins. Where as SMF the list is short and to the point.

This isn't really a bad thing, it can be off putting at first though.

At the end of the day it will take a bit more time to learn the ACP of PhpBB compared to others in my opinion.

phpBB is okay for free software. It took a bit for me to get used to how user permissions were set up though, and I don't like how by default members don't need to activate their accounts. I made the mistake of forgetting to change that feature and had a bunch of trolls join my Mighty No. 9 forum once. That was a nightmare to deal with.

My site is made with phpBB. I love it because it's simple, fast (generally) and easy to modify. There is admittedly quite a learning curve to it.

I think it can look hideous though if used wrongly - so I hope mine has got the balance right!
